Dr. Marlene Jones, EdD Senior Diversity Trainer Dr. Marlene Jones is a social and community advocate, who has worked in diversity and multicultural education for over 20 years. Dr. Jones holds a professorial appointment in the Social and Cultural Studies Department in the School of Humanities at Dominican University. She currently serves as a Preferred Hiring Pool Adjunct Professor for the Graduate School of Education at the University of San Francisco, where she teaches cross cultural courses through participatory research for master’s students and teaching credential candidates, focusing on the issues of educating students of color who are routinely failed by the system. In addition to her position as Professor in the School of Humanities at Dominican University, Dr. Jones recently served as the Director of Diversity Programs at the American Society on Aging, where she directed New Ventures in Leadership, a national training program for professionals of color and cultural competency training programs for non-profits and academic researchers. Dr Jones also served as Executive Director of the Marin Human Rights Roundtable on Hate Violence, where she interacted with the Marin County Police Chief’s Association, County District Attorney and Marin County School Districts to facilitate the adoption of a countrywide hate crimes protocol. She collaborated with organizations like the Marin Human Rights Commission on panel presentations to underscore the anti-hate mission. Dr. Jones has presented before the World Conference on Women, in Beijing, China, the Symposium on International Development and Education at Stanford University, the Women in Society Conference at Sonoma State University, the Environmental Protection Agency in San Francisco, the Human Rights Commission in San Rafael, the Roundtable on Elders of Color and Physical Activity in Washington DC, and the American Society on Aging Annual Conference in Chicago. Dr. Jones has a great deal of experience in facilitating relationships between ethnic, racial and cultural affinity groups, including African Americans, Latinos, Asians and others. She is also experienced in working with women’s diversity issues, as well as diversity issues among the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. During the course of her work, she has found that variations in sexual orientation occur in all cross-cultural, age and socioeconomic groups. As a consultant for the American Society on Aging, Dr. Jones worked with community groups and the Environmental Protection Agency on several studies on the conditions affecting the lives of older adults of color, the largest growing population in the country. She has worked for many years to promote the worldview of the African Diaspora, in culture, language, politics, religion and spiritual practices. She has written several commentaries for local publications, including the Marin Independent Journal, and the Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s bi-annual publication. Her article, “Moving Toward an End to Suffering” will be published in the soon to be released book Dharma, Color and Culture: New Voices Dr. Jones leads and teaches the People of Color [Daylongs, Residential Retreats] and the African American Retreats at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. In addition, Dr. Jones gives Dharma talks for several groups at Spirit Rock. She is the co-founder of the Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Diversity Council and is the current Co-Chair. Dr. Jones’ speeches include her keynote address at Dominican University for Black History Month, her keynote address at the Annual Environmental Conference in Ukiah, and her keynote address at the Commonwealth Club, and World Affairs Council Dominican University on reflections of the World Conference on Women in Beijing China. Dr. Jones received her doctorate in International Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco, California in 1994.
