THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR DIVERSITY IN LAW

LFOA's National Institute for Diversity in Law program focuses on preparing students of color, from middle school through law school, for the demands, excitement, and rewards of successful careers in the law.

NIDIL’s ultimate goal is to increase the numbers and meaningful participation of racial and ethnic minorities at all levels of the legal profession, by channeling resources to critical points along the educational pathway,  thus ensuring greater access and fewer barriers to successful legal careers.

NIDIL is unique because of its holistic approach to achieving broader diversity. NIDIL’s focus will be on providing support inputs to students of color at crucial entry points – from middle school, high school, admission to college and law school, successful completion of law school, admission to the bar and entry into the legal profession. Too often the academic journey of minority students is a journey of isolation, frustration, financial pressure and gaps in their support systems.

NIDIL’s holistic approach is timely.  Students of color make up approximately 20% of our nation's law school population.  However, compared to white students, they face higher attrition rates, lower bar passage rates and lower employment rates following law school. Through our educational and mentoring programs, NIDIL will work to keep students of color on the pathway to successful careers in the legal profession.

NIDIL’s goal is not simply one of numbers – more students of color prepared to go to law school, more choosing to go to law school, and eventually more joining the profession. We have a much bolder vision – helping the legal profession welcome the increased number of attorneys of color into their ranks, with  genuine  respect for their personal character and unique talents -- talents that will enrich the profession’s tradition of service, its standard of excellence, and its principle of equity.
