Anna Marie Armstrong joined Mlegal Consulting in 2004 to lead the development of its In-House and Associate Division. She comes to the firm with a wealth experience in placing lawyers at large national and international firms, as well as midsized firms and boutiques in the Bay Area. She has also placed lawyers, including general counsels, at corporations in the high technology, biotechnology, financial services, entertainment and oil and gas industries.

Anna Marie has been in the legal recruiting business since 1997 and ran her own company, Ascend Attorney Search Consultants before joining Mlegal. Prior to starting Ascend, she was a Managing Director at Major, Hagen & Africa, where she also headed up the Diversity Task Force. She frequently speaks about diversity issues in the legal profession, the in-house job market and the Bay Area job market. She also conducts seminars for law students on resume writing and interviewing techniques.

Anna Marie was born in San Francisco , California and grew up in Palo Alto . She received her B.A. in English and American Literature from Brown University in 1986. After graduating from college, she was a legal assistant at Morrison & Foerster. She graduated from Boalt Hall School of Law in 1991 where she served as an Associate Editor on the California Law Review.

After clerking for the Honorable Earl B. Gilliam on the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, Anna Marie joined Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin as a litigation associate. While practicing, she worked on a variety of complex civil litigation cases including copyright and trademark infringement, insurance and securities fraud and employment discrimination. Edna M. Messick is the president and founder of E M Messick Consulting, Inc., a multi-service executive recruiting and consulting firm specializing in the placement of attorneys of color and diverse backgrounds at law firms and corporate legal departments worldwide. The firm also provides diversity consulting services to assist firms in identifying, attracting, recruiting and retaining attorneys of color, through assessing designing and implementing effective internal diversity programs.  

Ms Messick was formerly the Managing Director and Associate Publisher of American Lawyer Media’s Diversity Publishing Group and Law Firm Practice Development Director of the New York Law Journal where she produced such publications as the National Directory of Minority Attorneys and the Minority Law Journal.  She also serves as a Trustee of Lawyers for One America and was a collaborator in its Report to the President of the United States on the Status of Color and Pro Bono Services in the Legal Profession: Bar None.
